Fionnghuala Sweeney is Reader in American and Black Atlantic Literature at Newcastle University. Her research and teaching encompass 19th-century US Studies, African American literature and culture, literary ecologies, Black Atlantic studies, and Afromodernism. She has published on Frederick Douglass; Afromodernisms; the US and Cuban slave narrative; Ireland, Britain, and slavery; travel writing; visual culture; and Paul Robeson, amongst other things.
